UCSF Medical Center VPN downloads: Windows Instructions

Requirements

Installation

  1. Download the Windows 2000/XP installer OR the Windows Vista installer to your desktop.
  2. Exit all Windows programs.
  3. Disable any antivirus software.
  4. Double-click the ZIPped archive and choose a location for the compressed files to be extracted.
  5. When the extraction process has finished, open the folder where you saved the setup files and double click the "vpnclient_setup.exe" icon.
  6. You will see the Welcome screen:

    Click "Next."

  7. Read the license agreement on the next screen and check "I Accept."

  8. On the next screen, you are prompted for the program destination. The default is fine. Click "Next."

  9. The installer will cycle through its process, then display the Finish screen:

    Click "Finish" and restart your computer.

Configuration and Connection

Note: you must disable any firewall software or hardware on your PC or home network.

  1. Open the VPN Client program in the Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client menu
  2. You'll see the Connection List screen.

    Click "New."

  3. Fill it out so that it looks like this:

    The group-authentication password is in the confirmation email you received when requesting an account.

  4. Click on the Transport tab and make sure the window looks like this:

    (If you have trouble connecting, try checking the "IPSec over TCP" button.)

  5. Click "Save." This will bring up the Connection window:

    To connect to the VPN, double-click the UCSF connection entry or, with that entry highlighted, click on the "Connect" icon in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

  6. If all goes well, you will be challenged for your UCSF network username and password:

    Enter these, and click "OK."

  7. Read the disclaimer

    and click "Continue."

  8. You're connected. If you see a screen like this:

    you should click close.
